List of Muscle Relaxant Medicines

Muscle relaxants are medications that help reduce muscle spasms, which are involuntary muscle contractions caused by a spine-related problem, such as whiplash, fibromyalgia, or low back strain. Often, muscle spasms cause severe pain and may limit your mobility.

Your doctor may prescribe a muscle relaxant to ease muscle spasms, reduce pain, and help your muscles move better. When your muscles move better, it makes other spine pain treatments, such as physical therapy, stretching, and exercise, more effective.

Zanaflex (Tizanidine)

Zanaflex is used to treat spasticity by temporarily relaxing muscle tone.Take Zanaflex exactly as prescribed by your doctor. A single dose of 8 mg of Tizanidine reduces muscle tone in patients with spasticity for a period of several hours. The effect peaks at approximately 1 to 2 hours and dissipates between 3 to 6 hours. Effects are dose-related.

Lioresal (Baclofen)

Lioresal is a popular antispastic agent and a muscle relaxer that is also generically known under the name of Baclofen. This medicine is widely used in the treatment of several unpleasant muscle symptoms (such as pain, spasm and stiffness), that might be triggered by several muscle disorders such as multiple sclerosis.

Lioresal is a medicine that is usually prescribed to patients who are experiencing some of multiple sclerosis’ unpleasant symptoms (muscle pain, stiffness and spasm). However, this medicine could also be prescribed to treat or to prevent some other medical conditions (disorders) that have not been mentioned in this guide.

Neurontin (Gabapentin)

Neurontin is generically known as Gabapentin. Gabapentin are chemicals that affect the behavior of nerves that cause seizures and other types of tremors and pain. The exact way how Gabapentin works is unknown.

Neurontin is prescribed for the treatment of seizures and other types of pain. Neurontin is also prescribed along with other drugs for the treatment and management of postherpetic neuralgia, a kind of seizure and nerve pain brought about by herpes virus or shingles. Neurontin may also be used for other purposes aside from the ones mentioned above.

Flexeril (cyclobenzaprine)

Cyclobenzaprine belongs to the family of medications known as muscle relaxants. It is used along with rest and physical therapy for the relief of muscle spasm associated with acute (sudden and short-term) painful conditions. Muscle relaxants work in the central nervous system (CNS) to modify signals from the brain that cause the muscles to tighten. When used in combination with rest and physical therapy, muscle relaxants help to relieve the pain and stiffness caused by muscle spasm.

This medication may be available under multiple brand names and/or in several different forms. Any specific brand name of this medication may not be available in all of the forms or approved for all of the conditions discussed here. As well, some forms of this medication may not be used for all of the conditions discussed here.
